Shadows of the past (Part VII)

Shadows of the past

Chapter VII

"Good Morning Alex!" Nathalie said happily as she walked into the office holding a large cup of freshly made coffee.

"Yeah, Good morning to you too.." The dark haired Angel snorted. Nathalie sat down next to Alex who really seemed to be in a bad mood.

She put her cup aside and leaned back on the couch. "Is something wrong Alex?" She shifted uncomfortably before replying "No, should there be?"

Nathalie rolled her eyes at her and put an arm around her friend. "Right. Now wanna tell me what's wrong?"

Alex moved away from Nathalie. "I'm fine Nath. Not all people are as cheery as you!" Nathalie sighed deeply. "So, this thing with Dylan is still bothering you.."

The dark haired Angel gave her friend a look that said 'Don't start'. "I know how you feel but Dylan's a grown up woman. If she wants to get herself into this.. Who are we to stop her? It's not because we are her friends that we have to hold her hand at everything she does.. And if 'everything' includes dating the Thin Man.. Than so be it.. She need us Al.. And don't forget what you said yesterday.." Nathalie said.

Alex sighed. "I haven't forgotten that.. It's just hard to accept.. The guy tried to kill us.. For gods sake he tried to throw me of a building! It's just..Sometimes i'm a little afraid that she's gonna get hurt again..Like with Seamus.. We all know what a bastard that was.. And when I think about all that it just gets me all snappy.. I don't want to act that way.. Really I don't."

Nathalie reached for her coffee and said "That's true. Although this is a different situation. Dylan didn't know what kind of guy Seamus truly was. She fought the Thin Man. She saw him kill. He tried to kill her. Us. It's what he does. It's what he gets paid for. And don't forget he did save you two and Max. That's actually more than one good deed. But I do see your point Alex.. " She took a sip from it before she stated "It's kinda hard to work around.."

Alex nodded thoughtfully. "But I can see what you're getting at. I'll do my best." Nathalie smiled widely and hugged her Asian friend. "Good. Cause if this works out well we have to give him a proper welcome." Alex smiled weakly. "Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that.." Nathalie grinned. "Although you better watch out a little.." Alex gave her fellow Angel a questioning look. "With that hair pulling thing of his." She smirked.

Alex let out a sigh. "If he knows what good for him he better not."

Dylan awoke with the sun shining on her face. "Damn what time is it?" She asked herself sleepily. Then she remembered her date with Anthony. Immediately she scanned the room for the assassin but he was no where in sight. "Anthony?" She called out. No reply. Well that wasn't so strange. He didn't talk after all. "Really smart Dylan." She murmured as she sat up from the couch. She wondered if she had fallen asleep at some point during the evening but it had to be. "I guess I was more tired than I thought." She got up to make herself a cup of coffee when she noticed a small note laying on the table underneath an empty glass. "Must be from Anthony."

My Angel,

I am sorry I have left.
You fell asleep and I didn't want to wake you up.
But we will meet again soon.

Anthony

She smiled as she read the note. She had really enjoyed her time with Anthony and absolutely not regretted her decision to ask him over. She felt so safe in his arms, though she knew she could perfectly take care of herself, it was great to have a strong man around her, one who would be able to protect her if necessary. She took another look at the note. He was right. They would definitely meet again. She wouldn't want it any other way. "For I am his Angel." That made her smile even more. "Yep I'm in love!" What a way to start the day.

"I thought Charlie gave you girls time off." Bosley said as he entered the room. Nathalie turned in her seat. "We got news from Dylan, she's alright, and we wanted to tell Charlie." She said.

Bosley nodded. "That's great. I'll contact him right away." The speakerbox was turned on and a few seconds later a voice spoke.

"Good morning Angels." The mysterious Charlie said.

"Good morning Charlie." Nathalie and Alex chimed.

"So any news about Dylan?" A concerned Charlie asked.

Nathalie smiled, then her face grew serious. "She's fine. She had a car accident, though."

"My goodness. Did Dylan tell you this?" He asked. "Yes. We stopped by her apartment yesterday and she told us what happened. She had just gotten home herself. She only has a minor head injury." Alex continued.

"We decided to tell her about Seamus' brother too. She took it pretty well." Nathalie added.

"That's good to hear. Dylan is a strong woman.  Although we are not fully aware of Shawn O'Grady's intentions, Good or bad, we should keep our guards up." Charlie stated. " "We agree Charlie. We're keeping an eye out for him or any suspicious looking figure that is." Alex said.

"We found out something else too." Nathalie said. Bosley sat down in one of the armchairs. "What's that?" The Afro-American asked. Alex flashed Bosley a smile. "Something that you most definitely are not going to like."

"I still want to know. Now tell me." Nathalie grinned at him before turning to the speakerbox. "The Thin man, he isn't dead. Dylan saw him."

Bosley's jaw dropped a few inches. "Isn't he that creepy assassin from Romania, the one from the Orphanage?" Alex nodded. "That's the one."

"I thought you said that he fell of a roof during the Halo case?" He asked unsure.  Alex was the one to answer that question. "Yea he did. I guess he survived one way or the other."

Bosley leaned back into his seat before exclaiming "Damn that's one tough guy to kill!" Alex rolled her eyes at Bosley's statement.

"Ah so our assassin is alive. I know this is personal but is there anything between Dylan and him?" Charlie asked curiously. "I always look out for my Angels."

Alex got up and said. "You do the story Nath. I'm going to get myself a cup of coffee too. This isn't my favorite subject." Nathalie sighed. Still a long way to go she thought as she saw Alex leave the room. She wondered if Alex would ever accept The Thin Man.

"Well it's like this.." Nathalie began.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You guys stay here. I'm going to have a little chat with the Boss. I don't think he'll be glad to hear this.." Sullivan said to the other thugs as he left in a hurry to go see Shawn O'Grady.
Ten minutes later he arrived at O'Grady's mansion. In his office..
"I take it you came here to tell me about Helen's friend?" Shawn asked Sullivan who sat down in a chair in front of the desk.
"Well you see.." Sullivan started. "Just spit it out!" The Irish mobster said impatiently as he sat down at his desk. "I have an idea about who he might be. Well, I'm actually pretty sure.."
"Right, so who is he?" He asked annoyed. Sullivan half smiled and started to explain. "Yesterday I remembered something.. That night on the Hotel Rooftop there was this guy.. I can't say for sure.. but I think it's the same guy. If i'm not mistaken he's some sort of an assassin. Seamus was fighting the Angel when he suddenly steps in and tries to kill him. Why I don't know but I think it was because Seamus was about to kill her.  I didn't follow everything. But I did see our Boss - I mean Seamus -stab him from behind. The guy carried a sword. He got stabbed with that same sword. Then he fell of the Roof. Me and the guys were fighting that dark haired Angel at that moment.. After getting stabbed through the chest and a fall of a rooftop, he should be dead.. but I really think it's him because his body wasn't even found in that Alley. I think he and the Angel were getting close too.."
Shawn leaned back into his chair, bitterness shown all over his face. So he tried to kill his brother. No one gets away with that. "He won't survive this time.. How did he look like?" He asked.
"Well, he wore a black suit. Pinstriped. Black hair too. Carried a sword. A cane.. Sword in cane. I saw him pull it out and stab one of the guys with it. That's about everything I can remember really." Shawn nodded at Sullivan. "Good enough. You can go now. You will know when I need you and the others." He said as he spun around his chair. "Yes Boss." He then turned around and left the room.
"An assassin with a sword." Shawn mused. He had heard of such a man. That assassin had build up a pretty good reputation. If he's on the side of the Angels..it will be his downfall. Although he could use a man like him.. but the fact that he attempted to kill Seamus isn't something in his favor. He will have to die too..
"Interesting story Nathalie." Charlie began. "Quite unbelievable too." Alex muttered who had resumed her place next to Nath.
"I would like to talk to Dylan about this." Their Boss added. Nathalie took out her cell. "No problem. I told her I would call her in the morning anyway. I'll do it right away and ask her to come over." She then dialed Dylan's number and waited.
"Hi Nath!" Dylan replied sounding incredible happy. Nathalie was taken aback for a second but quickly recovered and replied equally cheery. "Hey Dyl! How are you?"
"Fine. Actualy never been better." Nathalie assumed that her date with Anthony went well. Dylan hadn't been in such a good mood for over 3 months now. "That's good." Nathalie said softly. "Ow hey can you stop by the Agency?" "Sure. i'll be over in about 20 min." "Great. Bye Dyl." Nathalie put her phone back into her purse. "She's on her way." Then she realized something. "She doesn't have a car!" Alex laughed. "She probably forget herself."
"Thank you Nathalie. You don't need to stay around. You girls do have some time off. Besides I would like to speak with Dylan alone." Charlie said.
Nathalie nodded and said "You're right Charlie. Say Alex why don't we go out tonight. You, me and Dylan? Just us girls."
"What about me?" Bosley asked slightly disappointed. "Girls night Bos." Nathalie replied sheepishly. "I'm in." Alex said, sipping her coffee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Why does everything seem so perfect?" Dylan asked the blue sky while driving the borrowed car from her neighbour, she didn't have a car anymore and had almost forgotten in her hurry to get to the Agency. But she was too happy to give a damn thing about it. Since she shad been reunited with Anthony, the world seemed to be a better place. Being in love can do amazing things to a person. She found that out first hand herself. Although she and Anthony still had a long way to go, she believed that everything would work out eventually. They had already come a long way since that night in the Alley of Corwins'.

"I hope I can finally enjoy my vacation.." She turned on the radio and sang along to a song of AC/DC.

Ten minutes later she arrived at the Agency. It took her longer than 20 mins to get there. Damn traffic. She hurried inside to find no one in the office. "Where is everybody?" She asked an empty room. She walked over to the couch and sat down.

"Good morning Dylan." Charlie said. Dylan turned her attention to the small speaker box. "Good morning Charlie. Say, where is everyone? Nathalie called me. She asked me to come over and now i'm alone here."

"I know. She and Alex were here. I wanted to talk to you, in private, so they left." Charlie explained. "I don't understand." Dylan couldn't hide her surprise. "About what?" She asked. "About your relationship with our assassin." He answered sincerely.

Alex and Nathalie must have told him that Anthony is alive. She had hoped to keep it a secret for a little longer but she guessed that option went right out the window now. "Relationship? Well, you can't really call it a relationship. And besides isn't this my bussiness?"

"Ofcourse it is Dylan. But the welfair of my Angels is also my concern. I know how hard the Halo case was on you. He is a very dangerous assassin. And I.." "I know what i'm doing." She cut him off. "All right, if you are sure about this." Dylan let out a sigh. "I am."

"I have faith in you Dylan." He said. This made her smile. "Thanks Charlie. Was there anything else?" She asked.

"No. Not at the moment. Go and enjoy your time off." Dylan got up and said. "I will!" and left the Office.

Shadows of the past (Part VI)

Shadows of the past

Chapter VI

"We should do this more often." Nathalie said to Alex as they walked back to the car, each holding several bags.  It was getting dark by now. They had spent most of the afternoon shopping together. "Yeah. But I don't think my bank account will allow it." Alex joked and they both laughed.

"Too bad Dylan didn't want to come with us." Nathalie said. Alex agreed. "Yeah, It would have been so much fun. But she wasn't feeling too well so.." They reached Alex's car and tossed their bags in the backseat. "You want to drive? I'm a bit tired after all that shopping." Nathalie nodded. "Sure."

Alex threw her keys over to Nathalie. "You know what? Maybe we could stop by Dylan. See how she is doing." Nathalie said as she got into the car. "Good idea. Let's go." Nathalie started up the car and pulled out of the parking spot.

6.30 PM. Anthony nervously at the clock as he took a long drag from his cigarette. It was almost time. There were moments when he wondered how the hell he had gotten into this mess. She is good. He is bad. How can such opposites end up together? It made no sense. But if he had to be completely honest with himself, for once he was glad that there wasn't anything logical about it.

He sat down in his armchair and sighed deeply. A few locks of his black hair hung loosely on both sides of his face, free from its gell. Normaly he would have his hair totally slicked back. But this was mostly on assignments. He had decided to leave it ungelled for now. Although, he could use a haircut soon. It was getting too long for his liking. He took one last drag from his cigarette before putting it out in the ashtray. Anthony got up, grabbed his cane from the black leather couch and left his apartment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dylan stood on her balcony, looking out over the street. The slight breeze ruffled her hair and it felt a little chilly giving her goosebumps. She had tried to watch some tv but her mind kept drifting off to other thoughts, mainly about Anthony. She wondered what they had. She had promised herself never to fall for the bad guy again. And yet, here she was, all dressed up for Anthony. But than again, was he really such a bad guy? He had saved both her life and Alex's that night on the roof. And he had protected Max at the Coal Bowl. He didn't have to do that and still he did. He walks the thin line between good and bad. She remembered her relationship with Seamus. He never really seemed that dangerous to her until he shot someone in cold blood. Right in front of her. From that moment on, everything had changed. But with Anthony it was different. She always knew what kind of a man he was. Hell, he slammed her into a brick wall, pulled her hair twice and almost killed Alex and she still liked him. No, she didn't just like the guy, she loved him. If she was able to look past all of that, she must love the guy.
She rubbed her arms against the air of the cold night. She decided to go back inside before she would catch herself a nasty cold. As she closed the glass sliding door to her balcony, she heard a noice that sounded like her doorbell. "Oh God, that must be Anthony." She rushed into the living room to open the door. After making sure she looked fine, Dylan opened the door and saw Nathalie and Alex standing there with astonishment written all over their faces. Nathalie was the first one to speak. "Hi Dyl, did we come at a bad time?" She said after looking her over. Dylan blushed. What a great time for them to drop by. "Yeah, we wanted to check up on you.. but from the looks of it.. you're doing alright." Alex added, not sure what to make of this.
There was no use in lying about it, so she decided to come clean. "Actually..Nath..Yes.. I..Uhm..Well I.. Sort of.. Have a date..With..Anthony.." Dylan mumbled. She looked directly at Alex who didn't seem too happy. She then glanced over at Nathalie. Luckily someone seemed Ok with it. "Good for you Dyl. Well we better get going then." Nathalie replied with a smile on her face. "Aren't you moving a little too fast Dylan?" Alex suddenly asked. Nathalie elbowed her friend. "What? I know what I said earlier but that doesn't mean I have to agree on everything!" Dylan felt herself getting angry. "No you don't Alex. But i'm old enough to take care of myself. Anthony can be here every minute. So.. If you guys don't mind.. Please?" Nathalie smiled a little and then nodded. "No we don't. Enjoy yourselves. We'll call you in the morning. And Dyl.. Do be careful.. Just in case." Dylan nodded. Nathalie grabbed Alex's arm and dragged her downstairs. As soon as they were out of sight, she stepped inside and closed the door behind her. Well that went great..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anthony parked his car across the street. He was about to get out when he saw two women coming out of the building. He recognized them almost immediately. It were her friends, the other Angels. They seemed to be arguing about something.. or maybe about someone.. He saw them walking towards a red car that was parked a little further down the street. As soon as they took off he got out and stalked towards the building. Would he go inside the usual way as in through the window or would he just walk up to her apartment..? Well she did ask him over so maybe he should go for the second choice. She would probably appreciate it more if he didn't come through her window. So, he slowly dragged himself up the stairs. He knew that she lived on the second floor. Soon he found himself standing in front of her door. Should he ring or simply knock? Anthony get a grip on yourself he thought. He then pushed the doorbell.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was only minutes after Nathalie and Alex left that there was already someone else at the door. Dylan presumed that this time it would be Anthony. It was almost 7 pm. Dylan was happy that he didn't drop out on her. She made her way to the door. "All right. This is it." She put on a her best smile and then slowly opened it.
There he was. He was wearing his usual attire, the black pinstriped suit. His cane, with the deadly rapier inside, neatly tucked under his right arm. His hair gell free, just like that time at the Coal Bowl. Her eyes met his and she almost felt her knees buckle under the intensity of his gaze. Then she saw his eyes dart over her body for a brief moment.
He felt hypnotized by the sight of her wearing this absolutely gorgeous dress. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He thought about how good the red color made her hair look. He really had to control the urge to just grab a handful and pull. But he knew that she wouldn't care much for that idea. Maybe later tonight.
Dylan suddenly felt extremely hot, like she had a fever. She tried to break the silence. "Hi. I'm glad you could make it." He leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her lips. She smiled up at him. "Why don't you come in?" She stepped aside to let him through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"How are we going to find out who that guy is. Do we know anything at all that can help us. Without causing suspicion or getting caught?" Ivan asked Sullivan who rubbed his chin absently. "Hm we do know a few things. For one,  He brought her home. So she must have stayed with him. The accident happened only the night before. Besides we saw that her friends arrived later on so she probably never was with them in the first place. So she had to be with him. Secondly, it's kinda odd that, if he got her out of there, which i'm pretty sure of, he didn't wait for the Police to make any statements or that he waited for the paramedics to arrive. Besides he could have taken her to a hospital.. Though, she wore a bandage.. and we have checked them. No Dylan Sanders or Helen Zaas. Strange huh? It's almost like he avoided them on purpose..Why would anyone do that eh? Why would anyone sneak out like that? A total stranger wouldn't do that."

"He's probably just one of her friends.." Ivan said. Sullivan eyed him skeptical and shook his head. "Strange friend that is. No, besides when we saw him this morning, I got this really weird feeling about him. It was like I knew him. He looked familiar in a way.. Even from that distance.. Somehow he gave me the creeps..In a way he reminded me of someone.." He shuddered at the thought. "Goddamnit!" He cursed and ran a hand through his hair. Then, a thought came to his mind. "No, it can't be.." He said in a near whisper, more to himself than to his fellow mate in crime. Ivan looked at him questioningly. Sullivan got up from his chair and started to pace around the small room. This afternoon they had gone to see their Boss, after that they had driven back to this small deserted building just outside LA. He, Ivan and the other thugs were staying here. He stopped abruptly and turned to Ivan. "Did they found any other bodies besides the one from Seamus? That night in the Alley?"

"I don't see what that's got to.." He was cut off by Sullivan who grabbed him by the collar. "It's got everything to do with it! Now answer me!" Ivan looked wide eyed at him. Sullivan took a deep breath before letting go of him. "Now did they?" Ivan tried to recompose himself a little before answering his question. "No I don't think they mentioned another body. Only the body of Seamus which had been hit by the Big E of the Sign. Why?" He asked hesitatingly. "Remember that guy who appeared on the Roof out of nowhere?" Ivan nodded. "I saw him got stabbed by Seamus and then he fell of the Roof. His body should've been down there too." "You think it's him?! But you can't survive a fall like that!" He sighed. "I know it sounds impossible but I think that bastard's still alive."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dylan seated herself on the couch and patted the spot next to her. He merely watched her for a moment before settling down next to her. She grabbed hold of the cane and felt him tense up. "It's ok, i'm just going to put it over there." She said glancing over at the armchair. He held onto it for a couple of seconds before finaly letting go so Dylan could put it aside. Then she turned back to him. "To be honest, I wasn't sure if you really would have come tonight." She smiled weakly. He got his notepad and pen out of his jacket pocket and scribbled something down. She took the note and read. "I had my doubts too, but I promised that I would and I don't just break my promises." She looked at him and said. "Thnx. And I really mean it when I say that i'm glad you are here..with me."
He reached over with his right hand and caressed her cheek. She closed her eyes at his touch. He couldn't control himself and leaned over to kiss her. He wanted to kiss those full lips of hers so badly. She was the only one who could make him long for a woman this much. He dropped his right hand and slipped his arm around her waist. His left hand tangled in her hair, holding on to a handful of that lovely auburn hair. She was returning his kiss with heated passion, tasting one and another. After awhile they had to break apart to get some air. They kept staring into eachothers eyes.  Dylan, her cheeks a little flushed from the kiss, decided to speak up. "Can I.. uhm.. Get you something to drink..?" She mentally slapped herself. Maybe she should better shut up but he gave her a small smile and nodded. "Let's see. I have good Scotch. Also Brandy or if you like.." She stopped as she saw him write something down. He handed her another note. "I'd like some Brandy." She handed the note back and got up. "Well, then i'll go fix you some.."
He neatly folded the piece of paper and slipped it into his pocket. This wasn't so bad. He moved a little on the couch, trying to get in a more comfortable position. He wasn't used to go on dates..with women..or anything that resembled it at all for that matter. The only thing he had was his job and it wasn't the kind where you make many friends. He never really needed them before. He was used to being alone. Aside from the nuns at the Orphanage, he had never met anyone who truly cared for him. But he got used to it after nearly 15 years of almost complete lonelyness. And now, he had found someone who did care for him.. Maybe even love him.. It sure seemed like it. The more he thought about it the more he realized that this maybe was his only chance for true happiness, whether he deserved it or not.
Anthony was brought back to reality when he saw Dylan standing in front of him holding a glass of Brandy. With a smile she handed him his drink. "Here you go." He nodded and took a sip from it. Hmm quite good stuff actually. He smiled up at her. "I know." She grinned and regained her position next to him. "You know, Nathalie and Alex were here not so long ago.."  He swirled the liquid around and nodded. "You knew?" Again he nodded. He placed the glass down on the Salon table and wrote down a few words. He ripped off the page and handed it to her. "I saw them leave the building." He remembered them arguing about something..Before she could say anything, he took the note out of her hand and wrote something else on the back of it. "Did you tell them about me?" He had written down.
Dylan fumbled with the small paper for awhile before answering. "Yea, I did. You told me I could so.. And well they were asking alot of questions so I ended up telling them that you were alive and that you took care of me after the accident. At first they were shocked.. Kind of normal I guess. You were supposed to be dead. But it wasn't so bad.. Nathalie actually took it pretty well.. Alex on the other hand.. Although i'm sure she'll come around.. It's only a matter of time.  I was glad that I said it. I hate keeping secrets from my friends." Before she could go on, another note was handed to her by Anthony. "Did you tell them just now? "She shook her head at his question and said "No, This morning. They came to see me not long after you brought me home." He cocked an eyebrow at her. "What?" She asked him. He quickly scribbled down his answer. She sighed. He must have alot of these notepads. She took the note and read. "When I saw them they seemed to have an argument." She nodded as she understood what he meant and said. "That's probably because I told them that I had a date with you.. And well Alex.. You can figure out the rest.." A sad look had overcome his features. She reached out to touch his face. "It's ok. She will have to accept it. She's just a little overprotective now.. She's my friend after all. But i'm not going to give up on us that easily.." He tried to smile a little and gave her a curt nod. "Good. We're not going to let this ruin our evening now are we? How about seeing a movie? I have "Gone with the wind". It's a real classic. I bet you know it too." He looked at her surprised. Dylan laughed. "Yeah maybe not really my kind of movie but I guess I picked up this little habbit from Nath. She loves those Classics. So what's it gonna be?" He placed the pad and pen on the table and leaned over to kiss her. When he pulled away he nodded. "All Right." When she got up a hand on her arm stopped her. She turned to look at him. He tapped his head with a finger. "Oh you mean the bandage?" He nodded. "Well the wound is healing pretty good so I decided to skip it. It would ruin my hair anyway but really it's fine." Dylan got the dvd and inserted it in the Dvd player. She hopped onto the couch and snuggled into Anthony's arms. He rested his chin on top of her head, careful not to hurt her. Tonight the outside world ceased to exist for there was only her and Anthony.
